LUIS A CASTRO, D.V.M.

New York and Florida

Luis A. Castro received his DVM degree from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. He joined Teigland, Franklin & Brokken in 1991 after working in an ambulatory/broodmare practice in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He has been a full partner at TFB since 1996, and currently practices November through April at Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach, Florida, and May through October at Saratoga Racetrack in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Dr. Castro's professional interests include lameness, diagnostic imaging, and disorders of the upper airway. He has performed more than 2,000 surgical procedures to correct the dorsal displacement of the soft palate known as a sternothyroideus tenectomy, or more commonly, the Llewellyn procedure.

In 2004, Dr. Castro co-founded the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners (FAEP) and served on the Executive Board through 2007. He was also elected as the President of this organization in 2006. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and the Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA). He has authored and co-authored several papers on equine antibiotic pharmacokinetics that have been published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR).

Dr. Castro was born in Caracas, Venezuela and was raised in Maryland. He is bilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish. He enjoys traveling, playing golf and scuba diving with his wife Sharon, who is a professional photographer. They are also the proud "persons" to 3 Australian Shepherds: Kona, Hilo and Kai.
